Inspirational Posters
You are to learn about typography and connotative imagery to create an inspirational poster. The focus will be on creating meaning through functional design principles and compositional strategies.
Marking criteria:
- Conceptualisation and development of imaginative or personally relevant visual ideas. (Evidenced through connection of phrase meaning to visuals PA1
- Application of technical skills with media, materials, and technologies to communicate visual ideas in resolved work(s) of art or design. (Evidenced in final design) PA4
- Understanding of aesthetic or functional qualities in works of art or design. (Evidenced through composition to create meaning) KU3
- Analysis and interpretation of works of art or design from different contexts. (Evidenced through analysis of posters) AR1
Steps:
- Complete typography tasks to understand typefaces, letterforms and visual hierarchy.
- Creative lettering to understand connotative meaning.
- Collect poster imagery and annotate to explore the compositional qualities and how they created meaning.
- Choose an inspirational quote or phrase.
- Explore the meaning of this phrase and how you will represent it’s meaning through visuals using any medium through design roughs and tests. You must present this as a folio.
- Create a final design.
Example made on Photoshop. The background was made using watercolour paint and salt. This was photographed and put into Photoshop. The image was edited to brighten and saturate. The text was added using contrasting typefaces.

- Letter anatomy

- How to mix fonts
This book Creative Lettering and Beyond is a fantastic source of inspiration and ideas for this project, just ask the teacher to see it. Authors are Gabri Joy Kirkendall, Laura Lavender, Julie Manwaring and Shauna Lynn Panczyszyn.

- Creating your own letters
Step 3:
Collecting images for your folio
In this step you will need to collect posters and typefaces as inspiration to analyse and understand preparing you for creating your own design.
- In a Word document paste images of posters and typefaces, at least 6 images.
- Under each image write why you chose that image.
Step 4:
Choose an inspirational quote
In the same Word document as above, write at least 3 phrases or quotes that are inspiring in some way.
- You may like to look at people who inspire you
- Famous quotes such as from Ghandi, Martin Luther King, Einstein, etc.
Step 5:
Explore and Experiment
This is the most important step.
You will really need to look at your quote and think about how you will present this font so that it's meaning is emphasised through your posters design. You will also need to make sure you are creating an aesthetically pleasing composition and are considering the design principles.
In this step you are collecting experiments to show your thinking and problem solving for your folio.
You should be creating and keeping all:
You can use any medium to create your poster. I suggest either watercolour paint and/or Photoshop.
You will really need to look at your quote and think about how you will present this font so that it's meaning is emphasised through your posters design. You will also need to make sure you are creating an aesthetically pleasing composition and are considering the design principles.

You should be creating and keeping all:
- Sketches or design roughs to test out different layouts and compositions
- Medium experiments - testing out watercolour, Photoshop techniques, etc.
- Anything else you've made that is related.
You can use any medium to create your poster. I suggest either watercolour paint and/or Photoshop.
Step 6:
Create a final design
Once you have a design that you are happy with you may create your final poster.
- You will need to show good craftsmanship and effort.
- Make sure to look at the small details and use tools such as rulers, compass, the light table, etc. to assist you to get the best results.
