Art Principle: Balance
Understanding balance is about understanding the overall structure of an artwork.
You need to understand what makes something visually heavy and visually light and how the heavy and light relate to each other within the space.
We are talking about visual weight, not how much the subjects weigh!

Types of balance:
Lets looks at some different structures for creating a visually balanced artwork:
Influences on visual weight:
- Position (objects further from the centre carry more weight)
- Size (larger things seem heavier)
- Texture (things with more complex texture seem heavier)
- Value (darker things feel heavier)
- Quantity (many small things can balance the weight of a big thing)
- Shape (more complex shapes feel heavier)
- Colour (brighter and more saturated colours appear to be heavier than duller and less saturated colours)
