Art Principle: Emphasis
Emphasis is the active decision to bring attention to one area of an artwork. It is creating a unified artwork and then adding variety with purpose. It’s like adding some ‘spice’ or some variety so it doesn’t get too boring.
Consider this artwork below.
What parts of the artwork bring unity?
What has been emphasised to make areas stand out?

Your Task:
- Create a free choice drawing
You may wish to photocopy your work to help you experiment in the next steps. - Draw a shape over a section.
Consider the size and placement of the shape – symmetrical or asymmetrical composition? - Using secondary colours, apply paint inside the shape only.
You will use watercolour paint and you must use secondary colours only.
Teacher Example
This is a design I created on Word. I collaged multiple photos together (I cut the background out from the photos using the 'Remove Background' tool)
I then placed a circle to plan where I would put colour later.

I then drew the image onto A4 paper.
I have painted inside the circle with watercolour paint.
I have not finished this yet clearly as I still need to add the pencil details of the other flowers and the bee.
